The issue of plastic pollution has been gaining increasing attention in recent years, and for good reason. Plastics are ubiquitous in our daily lives and have become a major environmental concern due to their persistence in the environment and harmful effects on wildlife and human health. In Hong Kong, plastic pollution is a significant issue, with alarming levels of plastic waste being generated and discarded each year. During this lecture, we will explore the state of plastic pollution in Hong Kong, the sources of plastic waste, and the impact on wildlife. We will also look at the government’s actions, such as the ban on single-use plastic items starting on April 22nd and the Municipal Solid Waste Charging scheme, which will be implemented in the summer of 2024, to address the problem. The lecture will also highlight the importance of individual actions and how everyone can play a role in reducing plastic waste and promoting a more sustainable future.
