Lidar remote sensing data products to facilitate science and engineering research, policy decision and environmental and property management in Hong Kong | Project Coordinator: Dr Joseph Michalski Department of Earth Sciences Project summary: A Hong Kong based international company (DiMap) is a global supplier of aerial survey remote sensing data. They have, at their expense, collected LIDAR data of Hong Kong. LIDAR is laser ranging data that provide very precise topographic information (for example, cm-scale elevation precision and <30 cm-scale pixels), and are donating the data (valued at $HKD 1.4M) exclusively to HKU for curation and use by our remote sensing team (led by Michalski). This project requests funding to create and disseminate high-level data products for research, planning and public use.

Parsimonious High-order Multivariate Markov Chain Models For Improving Real-time Automatic Music Generation in Robotic Musician and Electricity Load Forecasting in HK | Project Coordinator: Professor Ching Wai-ki Department of Mathematics Objective: (i) To collect evident that the underpinning research improves real-time automatic music generation in robotic musician Shimon. (ii) To develop accurate mathematical models based on my underpinning research with China Light and Power (CLP) for electricity load forecasting. and policy.
Assessing impact of conservation forensics research on the fight to reduce global wildlife trade | Project Coordinator: Dr Caroline Dingle School of Biological Sciences Objective: Conservation forensics research and outreach work being conducted by faculty members in the School of Biological Sciences is contributing to the fight against illegal wildlife crime. Based on an earlier knowledge exchange grant, we developed an impact case study based on this work which was rated as a 3* by external reviewers. As advised by these reviewers, with this grant we will collect further evidence (particularly of impacts based on relatively recent outputs), that this research is leading to policy and environmental changes to raise this to a 4* case study.
