Objective: (i) To collect evident that the underpinning research improves real-time automatic music generation in robotic musician Shimon. (ii) To develop accurate mathematical models based on my underpinning research with China Light and Power (CLP) for electricity load forecasting. and policy.

Assessing impact of conservation forensics research on the fight to reduce global wildlife trade

Assessing impact of conservation forensics research on the fight to reduce global wildlife trade

Project Coordinator: Dr Caroline Dingle

School of Biological Sciences

Objective: Conservation forensics research and outreach work being conducted by faculty members in the School of Biological Sciences is contributing to the fight against illegal wildlife crime. Based on an earlier knowledge exchange grant, we developed an impact case study based on this work which was rated as a 3* by external reviewers. As advised by these reviewers, with this grant we will collect further evidence (particularly of impacts based on relatively recent outputs), that this research is leading to policy and environmental changes to raise this to a 4* case study.

DNA

Project Coordinator: Professor Billy Chow

School of Biological Sciences

Objective: The project aims to build impact case studies within the School of Biological Sciences.

2016-17

Public roadshows to promote light pollution education in the community

earth

Project Coordinator: Dr Jason C S Pun

Department of Physics

Objective: The project aims to (1) educate the public about the impacts of light pollution to the environment, through the organization of roadshows in public venues including shopping malls and public spaces; (2) promote good lighting practice by piloting an online public directory of good and poor lighting installment in the communities; (3) expand the international knowledge exchange effort through the Globe at Night – Sky Brightness Monitoring Network project which adopt the HKU-developed standardized method of quantifying the extent of light pollution.

An integrated approach to conservation forensics: reducing wildlife trade globally through technology, analytics and education

river-horse

Project Coordinator: Dr Timothy Bonebrake

School of Biological Sciences

Objective: As a globally important hub for legal and illegal wildlife trade, Hong Kong is uniquely situated geographically and economically to impact terrestrial and marine natural resources worldwide. In this project we will corroborate and synthesize several past, on-going and emerging efforts at the University of Hong Kong which are leading the way in providing for capacity in conservation forensics and establishing a means to impact society through the reduction of wildlife trade.
