- Introduced a host of new initiatives in the undergraduate curricula:
- Opened up the option of Intensive Majors for students who would like to specialise in a particular discipline
- Bridged articulation pathways to widely recognised postgraduate programmes at both HKU Science and renowned universities overseas
- Accreditation programmes from international professional bodies for four Majors in Chemistry (Intensive), Ecology & Biodiversity (Intensive), Geology (Intensive) and Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (Intensive)
- Introduced the Minor in Science Entrepreneurship, helping students visualise how training in science bears relevance to the real world
- Hosted interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts and Sciences programme - BASc in Applied Artificial Intelligence (BASc(AppliedAI)); and co-offered Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) with other Faculties

- Professor Ngai Ming MOK was elected as a Member of The Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong
- Five-year Plan has been formulated for Faculty’s strategic moves, aiming high by targeting academic staff growth of 20% and maximising research performance

A Partner State Key Laboratory was established on Synthetic Chemistry

Stephen Hui Geology Museum opened
- Professor Chi Ming CHE from Department of Chemistry received the first class prize of the State Natural Science Award for 2006 from Premier Jiabao WEN in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. He became the first Hong Kong Scientist to win this award
- Formation of School of Biological Sciences with the merging of the Botany, Ecology & Biodiversity, and Zoology departments
- Introduction of common admission to 6901 Bachelor of Science (BSc) programme
Professor Vivian Wing-Wah YAM from Department of Chemistry was the first Chinese recipient to be awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Centenary Lectureship & Medal
The Centre of Theoretical and Computational Physics opened
- Introduction of Major and Minor system which students can earn credits from elective courses offered by five collaborative faculties: Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social Science, and Faculty of Business
- Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences joined the Faculty of Science
The Department of Zoology from the Faculty of Science and the Department of Microbiology from Faculty of Medicine worked closely to undertake research about SARS coronavirus. Departments of Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science also took part in SARS-related research projects
Summer Science Institute for secondary school students launched
Professor Vivian Wing-Wah Yam was elected as member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, at the age of 38 as the youngest member of the Academy

Kadoorie Biological Sciences Building opened
