In Memory of Professor Tze Leung LAI

Professor Tze Leung LAI, a distinguished alumnus of the Department of Mathematics at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and a world-renowned statistician, passed away on May 21, 2023. He held the esteemed position of Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor at Stanford University.

Professor Lai's contributions to mathematical statistics and sequential statistical analysis were of great significance, particularly in the development of a comprehensive approach to sequential tests of composite hypotheses. His work earned him numerous accolades throughout his career.

Beyond his groundbreaking research, Professor Lai will be remembered for his mentorship and guidance to young statisticians, leaving an indelible mark on the statistics and scientific community. While his absence creates a profound void, his pioneering work and lasting legacy will continue to inspire generations of scholars.

We extend our deepest condolences to Professor Tze Leung Lai's wife, Ms Letitia Chow, his two sons, two grandchildren, as well as his family, friends, colleagues, and students. They had the privilege of knowing and working alongside an exceptional individual whose brilliance and passion for statistics will be sorely missed.
