Earth Scientist Featured on IAVCEI Newsletter as an Outstanding Early Career Researcher

Professor Weiran LI, Department of Earth Sciences
Professor Weiran LI, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and the Curator of the Stephen Hui Geological Museum, has been featured in the Newsletter of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI). Recognised as the world's largest and most esteemed volcanology association, IAVCEI invited Professor Li for a feature article sharing her perspective on volcanology as an Early Career researcher. The full article in the IAVCEI Newsletter can be accessed here: IAVCEI Newsletter 3-2024.
With a history spanning over 100 years and a membership exceeding 2,800 scientists worldwide, IAVCEI includes about 30% of Early Career researchers, defined as those within seven years of earning their PhD. The IAVCEI Newsletter, published quarterly, dedicates one feature article per issue to an outstanding Early Career researcher. Professor Li is the first Asian researcher to be featured.
In her feature article, Professor Li shares her vision for fostering scientific communication and collaboration among volcanologists worldwide (and particularly in Asia), to advance our understanding of volcanism and its influence on human societies. Soon after joining HKU as an assistant professor, Professor Li led the volcanology group at DES to join the Asian Consortium of Volcanology (ACV) which made HKU the first Hong Kong based organisation providing students with access to the ACV meetings, workshops and training courses. Through these scientific and education events with IAVCEI and ACV, Professor Li wishes to encourage more undergraduate-postgraduate students to explore the mystery of volcanoes and our dynamic planet and to help grow future earth scientists in Hong Kong.
