FACULTY AWARD
Award for Teaching Excellence 2023-24
‘There are no boundaries between the disciplines of science—whether it’s chemistry, biology, or physics. As educators, we should encourage our students to be open-minded and provide them with a variety of tools to address real-world challenges.’

Dr Angela Mai Yan YUEN
Associate Head of Teaching, Department of Chemistry
Dr Yuen has been recognised with several awards and grants for her outstanding contributions to teaching and learning, including the Award for Teaching Excellence in 2024 and the Award for Teaching Innovations in E-learning in 2020. She has also received various Teaching Innovation and Development Grants.
Dr Yuen believes in connecting students’ personal experiences with chemistry principles to spark discussions about chemical phenomena. By examining the chemistry principles behind everyday occurrences, she stimulates students’ curiosity and fosters a sense of belonging in their learning journey. Dr Yuen emphasises that learning chemistry through daily experiences is inherently interdisciplinary, as science in the real world does not separate biology, chemistry, and physics. Her teaching philosophy strongly supports interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching efforts across different departments and faculties.
To enhance learning, Dr Yuen incorporates various digital and e-learning tools, such as 3D printing and computer modelling, to help students visualise complex concepts and create tangible prototypes. These tools provide hands-on learning experiences that foster creativity and improve problem-solving skills. By integrating various digital tools into the teaching and learning activities, Dr Yuen ensures that her students are well-prepared for the demands of the modern, technology-driven world.
