Miss Chen
Miss Yu CHEN
Department of Chemistry

"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." – Albert Einstein

Miss Chen received her BSc degree in Applied Organic Chemistry from Anhui University. After graduation, she continued her studies in organic synthesis and is currently pursuing her PhD degree at The University of Hong Kong under the supervision of Professor Pauline Chiu of the Department of Chemistry.

Miss Chen was recruited as a demonstrator for an advanced course CHEM 4443 – Integrated Organic Synthesis in 2013. She considered that the duty of a demonstrator should be beyond “demonstration” as the title suggested. She tried to help her students, each with their individual qualities and background, to master the art, as well as the science, of chemistry. Moreover, uniquely in the laboratory environment, demonstrators have to be watchful against any potential hazards, and she constantly placed the safety of her class in the top priority. Due to her satisfactory lab teaching in the course, she was newly appointed as Head Demonstrator in 2016. She had to oversee and organize the whole laboratory course in addition to her aforementioned duties.

Also in 2016, Miss Chen had been recruited as a tutor for a core course CHEM 3443 –Organic Chemistry Laboratory. As the first tutor of a brand new course, she prepared from scratch a complete set of tutorial materials. She also recognized that in a tutorial, unlike in a lecture, interaction is of vital importance. Hence, she actively directed discussion with the class. She tried to teach her students by encouraging the participation of everyone in these discussions, whether in-class or after-class.
