About the CompetitionHKU Science Currio

Think you can spot the difference between scientific fact and fiction? Our “Science Communication Contest: Myth Busters Challenge 2026” is calling for the next generation of fact-checkers to bridge the gap between scientific truth and widespread misconceptions. Pick a persistent myth—from cultural traditions to hygiene habits and more—and dismantle it using evidence and creative analogies. Bring your findings to life in a compelling 5-minute video and show the public why scientific literacy matters more than ever!

Your Selected Topic

  • Pick a widely held science myth
  • Refute it using reputable scientific evidence
  • Explain why the misconception persists
  • Present your findings using fun analogies or experiments
  • Use "layman-friendly" language for a general audience
For examples of possible topics, please refer to our briefing video.

The presentation is about 5 minutes and can be conducted in either English or Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin).

Eligibility

  • The contest is open to students studying in Forms 3 to 5 (equivalent to Grades 9 to 11 / Year 10 to 12) in secondary schools located in Hong Kong, Macao, and Shenzhen (including public schools, schools under the Direct Subsidy Scheme, international schools, etc.) during the academic year 2026-2027.
  • Participation in the contest will be based on a group format, with each group comprising 3 to 6 students.
  • All participating group members must be students of the same school/institute. Each school/institute can enter a maximum of two teams in the contest.
  • Participating groups must either submit the entries through their respective schools/institutes or be nominated by their schools/institutes to enter the contest (i.e. the entry should be submitted via the enrolment system by a teacher in charge, who is expected to be the primary contact point for the participating group(s) through the contest).
  • The students who have won prizes in the previous year's contest will be eligible to participate, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.

Each group can submit only ONE entry.
