Professor Liu earned his bachelor’s degree in Materials Chemistry and master’s degree in Materials Science. He then studied at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Germany), where he obtained his PhD in Synthetic Chemistry in 2016. Following his doctoral studies, he joined the Technische Universität Dresden (Germany) as a postdoctoral fellow, later becoming a research group leader under the Chair for Molecular Functional Materials. In 2019, Professor Liu started his group in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Hong Kong.
 
Professor Liu’s current scientific interests include atomically precise synthesis of topological nanocarbons, including 1D, 2D and 3D molecular carbons, as well as their applications in organic electronics. In addition to the basic research, he also tries to bridge the gap between the fundamental framework and its practical applications and promote the transformation of laboratory research results into realistic productivity, which can serve the economic and social development of Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and Mainland China. Professor Liu is grateful for his mentors, collaborators, and students. He and his team are working hard together to develop the related synthetic approaches and resolve the challenges in this field. 
 
In recognition of his achievements, Professor Liu has been awarded several prizes including the Asian Core Program Lectureship Award (Singapore, 2023), the Small “Rising Star” (2022), the ChemComm Emerging Investigator (2022), the National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) (2021), the Research Grants Council Early Career Award (2020), and the IUPAC International Award for Young Chemists (Honorable Mention Award, 2017).
