Award for Service Contribution 2007-08

Dr Francis Ling obtained his BSc, MPhil and PhD degrees in The University of Hong Kong. He was the recipient of Sir Edward Youde Fellowship from 1994 to 1996, and was awarded the Fellow of Institute of Physics, UK in 2006. Since joining the University, Dr Ling has made valuable contributions to the Physics Department, the Faculty, the University, and to the community in Hong Kong. Francis has been active in promoting science to the public and in particular Physics among secondary schools. He was the Hon. Secretary from 2005 to 2007, and is currently the Vice-President of the Physical Society of Hong Kong, and has organized a series of public talks and exhibitions in collaboration with the Hong Kong Science Museum. In addition, Francis has been invited to offer advices to the HKSAR Education Bureau concerning the New Senior Secondary Physics Curriculum, and served as a member of the Hong Kong Examination Authority A Level Physics Subject Committee from 2001 to 2005. Francis's contribution to the community has not been limited to Hong Kong; he is a member of the Chartered Physicists Panel of the Institute of Physics, UK. Francis is currently serving on 12 University, Faculty and Departmental committees covering curriculum development, student affairs, resource management, and has been heavily involved in undergraduate academic advising and the reform of the physics program for the new BSc curriculum.
