Abstract

This talk will first introduce classical Fourier analysis and its applications to linear partial differential equations (PDEs) with constant coefficients, review pseudo-differential operators and their application to linear PDEs with variable coefficients, and present Bony’s decomposition with applications to nonlinear PDEs, particularly the incompressible Euler equations.

Speaker Professor Ping ZHANG

President, Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (AMSS), The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)

Professor Ping ZHANG is currently the President of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He received his BSc and PhD in Mathematics from Nanjing University in 1991 and 1997, respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Mathematics, CAS, from 1997 to 1999. Since 1999, he has been affiliated with the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, CAS and was promoted to full professor in 2003.

Professor Zhang’s research focuses on the mathematical theory of viscous fluid dynamical equations and the semi-classical limit of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. His honours include the Outstanding Youth Grant from the Natural Sciences Foundation of China in 2005; the China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award in 2007; the State Natural Science Award (Second Class Prize) in 2011; appointment as Changjiang Chair Professor at the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015; and the Shiing-Shen Chern Mathematical Award of the Chinese Mathematical Society in 2019. He was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2021 and will deliver a 45-minute invited talk at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2026.
