Giving Scientific Creativity Room to Thrive

     
    An international research team, including Emeritus Professor David Dudgeon from HKU’s School of Biological Sciences, warns that short-term funding, precarious career pathways and mounting publication pressures are making it increasingly difficult for scientists to pursue high-risk, innovative research. These pressures may not only slow scientific progress, but also place a disproportionate burden on early-career researchers and ultimately narrow the pool of motivated, creative scientists who remain in academia.
     
    Recent controversies surrounding plagiarism allegations, data fabrication, and AI usage have put an uncomfortable question in the spotlight: are modern academic systems getting better at identifying genuinely original thinkers, or merely better at rewarding those who learn how to succeed within the system? In a new Perspective article published in Nature Human Behaviour, a global team of researchers reviews how funding, peer review, publishing costs, employment insecurity, and academic hierarchies can favour safe and predictable research over bold ideas that challenge established thinking. They argue that contemporary academic systems systematically discourage high-risk, innovative research and place the greatest burden on early-career researchers.  
     
    Modern science increasingly depends on short-term funding cycles, productivity-based evaluation and intense competition for permanent positions. At the same time, major scientific advances often require intellectual freedom, tolerance of uncertainty, sufficient time and the possibility of failure. The researchers argue that this conflict particularly affects early-career researchers whose employment, funding, publications and future careers largely depend on decisions made by more established academics and institutions. Concomitantly, the number of PhD graduates and postdoctoral researchers has grown faster than the availability of stable academic positions in many systems. Peer review and research funding can add further pressure by favouring methodological familiarity, predictable outcomes and short-term feasibility over conceptual novelty. For researchers who depend on their next publication or grant to secure an income in science, pursuing safe and predictable research can therefore become a rational career strategy. 
     
    Publication costs, journal prestige and institutional inequalities reinforce these pressures. High article processing charges can favour researchers at wealthy institutions and in well-funded countries, while administrative work, teaching, peer review and fundraising reduce the uninterrupted time available for exploratory thinking. Early-career researchers may also remain dependent on senior investigators for employment, resources, publications and professional opportunities. The consequences are both scientific and personal. More than one third of PhD students have reported symptoms of depression and around one third have reported symptoms of anxiety in studies cited by the authors. At the same time, early-career researchers may increasingly carry out narrowly defined work within projects controlled by senior investigators rather than developing independent research programmes. Others may leave academia altogether, potentially removing innovative talent from the academic system. 

     

    The authors stress that early career researchers, senior academics, editors, administrators and funders all operate under institutional constraints. However, the consequences of intellectual risk-taking fall most heavily on researchers without permanent positions, independent funding or durable institutional autonomy. The Perspective therefore calls for longer funding periods and dedicated support for high-risk research, evaluation criteria that explicitly reward conceptual novelty, greater use of double-blind peer review, reduced administrative workloads and more stable research career pathways. The Perspective also argues that research assessment should place greater value on originality, collaboration, persistence and non-linear careers rather than relying heavily on publication counts and journal prestige. 

     

    Maintaining scientific creativity, the authors conclude, requires more than individual resilience. It requires anacademic system that gives early-career researchers the autonomy, time and security needed to pursue ambitious ideas, including ideas that may fail. Without these conditions, science risks rewarding strategic conformity over scientific creativity, potentially undermining the innovation needed to address the challenges posed by accelerating global Anthropogenic change.
