Carrying Momentum into the Year of the Horse

As we move into mid-February and welcome the Year of the Horse, I would like to extend my warmest greetings to colleagues and friends across the Faculty. Often associated with energy, perseverance and forward movement, the Year of the Horse feels like an apt moment to pause and reflect on the steady efforts that shape our work, and the progress that follows.
In the months leading into the new year, our community has continued to make meaningful strides across a wide range of disciplines. We have seen recognition for academic leadership, research that speaks directly to environmental challenges in Hong Kong, and new support for collaborative projects that extend our reach beyond the University.
This issue highlights several such milestones. They include the election of a faculty member to the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, research supported by the Research Impact Fund that addresses the sustainability of local marine ecosystems, Collaborative Research Fund to propel advancement in quantum science, and the award of NSFC/RGC Joint Research Funding 2026 to projects spanning chemistry, physics and the life sciences. Each story reflects a different aspect of what we value as a Faculty.
While these features focus on individual achievements, they are very much the result of collective effort. Behind every milestone are research teams, students, and colleagues whose contributions often take place quietly but matter greatly. As the new year unfolds, we take steady steps into the months ahead. I look forward to continuing this journey together, and to sharing more of our work and people with the wider community.
Warm regards,
Professor Edmund C M TSE
