Dr Angela Mai Yan YUEN
Associate Head (Teaching & Learning) and Lecturer
Department of Chemistry
Dr Angela Mai Yan Yuen has dedicated the past 13 years in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Hong Kong to fostering a vibrant academic community where science transcends traditional boundaries. Since joining as a Lecturer in 2012, she has been a passionate advocate for interdisciplinary science, weaving chemistry into diverse fields such as health, materials, and education through her engaging undergraduate courses and postgraduate programmes.
As an academic advisor, Dr Yuen finds deep fulfilment in mentoring students, guiding them as they craft their academic and career paths, and delighting in their growth through every conversation. She takes great pride in watching students evolve into mature individuals who find their own unique paths, a joy that continually fuels her commitment to service.
This nurturing spirit led her to establish the Chemistry Summer School, an outreach programme designed to introduce high school students to the wonders of chemistry. Born from Dr Yuen’s own desire to share her passion for science, the programme also serves as fertile ground for undergraduate students, empowering them to lead, design, and teach activities for their younger peers. This initiative fosters leadership and interdisciplinary learning through dynamic exchange. Dr Yuen especially treasures watching her students step into the role of mentors, discovering their own voices as they inspire the next generation.
This powerful chain of inspiration, one that moves from her to her students and beyond, is what continues to drive her mission. She looks forward to continuing this work, dedicated to creating ever more transformative opportunities that empower students to shape the future.
