In alignment with the university and faculty’s overarching vision, our mission and goal as a small size research unit are to become locally pre-eminent, leading in Asia, and globally competitive in selected sub-fields in research.
Our two main research areas are condensed matter physics and astrophysics, which had delivered world-class research outcomes, and hence we intend to continue to develop strategies that would increase both the number of world class research outputs and international standing of HKU physics.
We target strategically towards further developing our existing strengths in condensed matter physics (both theoretical and experimental), as well as astrophysics and astronomy. Moreover, based on the existing theoretical research strength, atomic, optical, and quantum physics has been identified as a third area to strategically grow, especially on the experimental side. Besides, the nuclear and particle physics group will play a key role in Hong Kong’s joint participation in international and regional collaborations on big science.
We actively recruit top talents for outstanding and strengthening performances. We also promote translational and applied research for societal, industrial, and economic impacts. Examples include optoelectronic devices, battery materials, etc.
