We admit around 20 postgraduate students (both PhD and MPhil) each year through a rigorous screening process by the Divisional Research Postgraduate Committee (DRPC).
We carry out summer research programmes for senior undergraduates to help the intake of RPG students and to enhance our undergraduate training. Most RPG students are financially supported via studentships and teaching assistance.
The RPG training comprises:
- Compulsory courses offered by the Graduate School, the Faculty of Science, and the Department of Physics, and elective courses offered by Physics Department; and
- Supervised research projects.
Our PhD training is designed to nurture independent researchers and future leaders in their respective fields.
To broaden the students’ horizons, the Division routinely organizes seminars and colloquiums that are mandatory for first year RPG students.
The Division also actively incorporates the university’s overseas pilot scheme, which supports RPG students to carry out research and/or make academic visits to overseas institutes. Progress is formally monitored through biannual bilateral reviews submitted by supervisors and RPG students, and assessed by the DRPC chairman.
