Machines can simulate human intelligence, think like human as well as mimic their actions. Can machines be creative? In this workshop, we will investigate whether machines can engage in creative activities through painting a picture and composing a song using Artificial Intelligence.

How do you decide which package of meat and meat products to buy in a supermarket? You probably use your senses to determine the quality of meat. Attributes of meat quality include colour, juiciness, texture and flavour. In this workshop, students will learn how to apply instrumental analysis to assess the quality of meat through colour and texture. Students also will learn to compare how ‘real’ sausage differ in quality from commercial ones by making the sausage and evaluating the flavour, texture and colour.

Are you healthy or unhealthy? A balanced diet and exercise are important combination for a healthy body. With the increase of Western diet such as burgers, pizza and variety of fast-foods, the health status of the youth is declining and becoming a Global problem. In this workshop, students will learn the use of simple physiological assessments to identify their health status. Measurement of body mass index (BMI), body fat, blood pressure and bone density students can self-check if one is obese or have a healthy heart or strong bones. From these measurements, the students will learn to interpret and improve their health status.

Sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) is the reciprocal exchange of genetic material between two identical sister chromatids. SCEs are produced when cells repair DNA damage. The frequency of SCE is highly elevated in cancer cells and cells derived from individuals with Bloom syndrome. In this workshop, students will conduct experiment to detect SCE in normal and Bloom syndrome cell lines.

Gases are everywhere. They are also very important - many natural processes would not occur without them. Students, however, generally hold alternative conceptions with respect to gases. In this workshop, students will engage in some hands-on, minds-on and exciting approaches in reconsidering their conceptions of gases. Questions to answer include: Are gases matter? Are all gases alike? How do they generally behave? How can we make and use some of them?

Plastic present in the environment will fragmentate in smaller pieces called microplastics. In this workshop we will explain how these microplastics formed and how we can collect them from the environment for their monitoring. We will experience in the laboratory how the samples are processed and microplastic pieces counted and identified. Finally, we will also discuss what are the actions we can take to reduce the plastic pollution.

Early astronomers imagined the Earth as the unmoving, fixed center of the Universe. This may seem silly to modern people, but the long-standing popularity of this model is due to its tremendous success despite its simplicity. We will use a smartphone app simulating the Armillary Sphere, a practical device based on the two-sphere model to explore its usefulness.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if materials become so thin and flat? Physicists have asked the same question for years and found various ways to explore such a “Flatland”. Unlike how difficult it sounds, one can now get even only one-atom-thin layer using sticky tapes. We will talk about the wonders of such “flatlands” in physicists’ viewpoint.

In this workshop student will learn about new discoveries in astronomy and gain hands-on experience in operating small telescopes. If weather permits, we will observe the Sun using the 16-inch telescope in the physics department.

Robotics play an increasingly important role in our lives, entertainment, healthcare, supply chain, business, and banking. The aim of this workshop is to introduce how to design an intelligent robotic in a simulated virtual environment, and to innovate you on robotics designs for entrepreneurship and changing our world. The workshop will (i) briefly introduce some basic concept on implementing a virtual intelligent robotics, and (ii) give a demo on controlling a robot in a simulated virtual environment.
