Research Assistant Professor Won 2021 International Organization of Chinese Physicists and Astronomers Outstanding Dissertation Award

Dr Wenyuan WANG, Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, has recently been presented with the 2021 International Organization of Chinese Physicists and Astronomers (OCPA) Outstanding Dissertation Award for his outstanding contribution to the studies of a wide spectrum of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols including the standard decoy-state BB84 protocol and the more recent measurement-device-independent (MDI)-QKD protocol and twin-field (TF)-QKD protocol.

About Dr Wang and his Research Work

Dr Wang received his BSc in Physics & Computer Science (double major) from The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2015, and PhD in Physics from the University of Toronto in 2020 under the supervision of Professor Hoi-Kwong LO. He worked at the University of Waterloo as a postdoctoral fellow for one year, and re-joined HKU in 2021 as a Research Assistant Professor collaborating with Professor Hoi-Kwong Lo.

Dr Wang’s main research interest is quantum communication, especially the design and optimisation of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, quantum networks, as well as the combination of novel computational techniques (e.g. machine learning and semi-definite programming) with QKD. Having re-joined the Physics Department at his alma mater, Dr Wang hopes to contribute by addressing practical problems in quantum communication and pushing its boundaries, as well as bringing in new perspectives in the field by utilizing cross-disciplinary computational approaches.

    About the Outstanding Dissertation Award

The International Organization of Chinese Physicists and Astronomers (OCPA) is a non-political, not-for-profit organisation aiming to promote physics and astronomy research in general and especially the achievements by ethnic Chinese physicists and astronomers. Its membership includes Nobel Laureates, a Field Medalist, members of the National Academy as well as many outstanding leaders of physics/astronomy research today.

The Outstanding Dissertation Award is awarded each year by OCPA to PhD recipients of Chinese ethnicity who obtained their degree in the past two years. Candidates are nominated by their PhD supervisor, and up-to-four recipients world-wide are selected each year for the award by a committee of distinguished physicists and astronomers, in recognition of the significant contributions to the field made by the awardee during their PhD studies.
