HKU Science welcomes HKDSE high achievers to our full spectrum of programmes

The Faculty of Science is pleased to announce that our new first-class double degree programme 6688 Science Master Class (SMC) is doing exceptionally well in attracting high DSE performers into our programme, according to the 2021 Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) Main Round offer results just released, with a median admissions score of around 40 for the best 6 subjects attained by the 17 admitted students, ranking the 8th out of the 43 HKU programmes.

The 6224 Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Applied Artificial Intelligence (BASc(AppliedAI)), another elite programme co-offered by the Faculty, remains one of the top programmes in the community. Twelve students with a median admissions score of 36 for the best 6 subjects opted for the AI programme in HKU.

The Dean of Science (Interim), Professor Vivian YAM extends her warmest welcome to all our newly admitted students. She attributes the encouraging admissions results to the programmes that have been designed to address the specific needs of talented students. “We understand the learning pace and needs of highly able students might be different. The SMC programme is designed to help students with high research aspirations to achieve their scholastic potential in science, allowing them to learn from renowned scientists in the Faculty, get to know the frontiers of scientific research, and most importantly, immerse themselves in an authentic research environment in the early years of their study,” said Professor Yam. “We thank our students for their interest in the programme. We will try our best to provide a good experience for their study.”

As Hong Kong’s role as a premier innovation hub in Asia becomes increasingly important and with the booming AI industry, Professor Yam emphasises that the AI applications in diverse areas highlighted in the BASc(AppliedAI) Programme would help students to develop their intellectual capacity essential to meeting new challenges. “In this digital era, the limitless power of AI impacts all aspects of our lives. We hope with the concerted efforts of our top-notch researchers, we are able to inspire the next generation of AI professionals,” she remarked.

“Though the SMC and BASc(Applied AI) programmes cater to supporting the growth of elite undergraduates, all our science programmes are internationally competitive and are designed to nurture our students to their fullest potentials,” Professor Yam added.
