Details of the ORF and SRF Schemes

Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) & Overseas Research Fellowship (ORF) Schemes

Since 2007, the Faculty of Science has implemented two schemes: Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) & Overseas Research Fellowship (ORF).  The ORF Scheme provides financial support to students to go to overseas laboratories or institutes to work on research project, while the SRF Scheme supports students to do research at a supervisor's laboratory in the Faculty of Science.





Within the Science Departments/School or the School of Biomedical Sciences

Overseas institutions


A stipend of HK$16,000

A stipend of HK$16,000 plus airfare (on a reimbursement basis, 80% of the actual airfare and and the maximum subsidy is HK$12,000)


  1. Complete the research project (duration is at least 2 months) under the supervision of research supervisors (both external and internal supervisors are required for ORF Scheme)

  2. Submit a research synopsis of 500 – 1,000 words on your project, a short passage of programme sharing, and a poster in September (for all participants)

  3. Participate in Poster Presentation in October (for all participants)

  4. Attend Research Colloquium in October/November (Five to six best poster presenters will give an oral presentation in this Research Colloquium)


Non-final year of BSc or BSc(AC) students

Students who participated or will participate in SRF/ORF Scheme must take and pass SCNC3111 Frontiers of science honours seminar course
