Dean's Honours List & Prizes

Students' academic achievements are recognized by the award of Faculty Prizes and by inclusion on the Dean's Honours List.

Dean's Honours List

As a further means to recognize BSc students' outstanding academic achievements, students who are within the top 10% of their class are considered by the Board of Examiners for the degree of BSc for inclusion within the Dean's Honours List in June every year. Students going out for exchange or on leave (1 semester or 1 year) would not be included in the Dean's Honours List.

Faculty Prizes

There are 29 prizes available in the Faculty of Science. Students are nominated by the relevant Chief Examiner and approved by the Board of Examiners in June every year.

Prize To whom the Prize is awarded

1. Ho Fook Prize

The best student among those completing BSc 1st year

2. Hong Kong University Alumni Prize

An outstanding BSc student on the basis of academic merit, participation in sports and other extra-curricular activities, leadership qualities and personality (on the recommendation of the Dean), among those completing the BSc final year

3. Dick Arther Memorial Prize in Chemistry

The most distinguished organic chemistry student in the final year of studies (on the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry)

4. Douglas Payne Prizes in Chemistry

(i) The best Chemistry student majoring in Chemistry, among those completing the BSc 2nd year (on the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry)

(ii) The best Chemistry student in Analytical Chemistry, among those completing the final year of BSc (on the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry)

5. G. T. Byrne Memorial Prize in Chemistry

The best Chemistry student, among those completing the final year of BSc

6. Alan John Ellis Prizes in Mathematics

Not more than five undergraduates in the Faculty of Science who have just completed their 1st or 2nd year of study

7. Walter Brown Memorial Prizes in Mathematics

(i) The best student in Mathematics, on the recommendation of the Head of Mathematics, among those completing the BSc 2nd year

(ii) The best student in Mathematics, on the recommendation of the Head of Mathematics, among those completing the BSc final year  

8. Liu Ming-Chit Prize in Mathematics
 

A student in Mathematics who has completed his/her 2nd or 3rd year of study, on the recommendation of the Head of Mathematics

9. Wong Yung Chow Prize in Mathematics

The best 3rd year student in Mathematics, on the recommendation of the Head of Mathematics  

10. Y. M. Chen Memorial Prize in Mathematics

The best student in mathematical analysis, among those competing the BSc final year, on the recommendation of the Head of Mathematics

11. Lee Chung Yin Jubilee Prize in Biological Sciences
 

(i) The best student in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, among those completing the BSc final year

(ii) The best student in Food & Nutritional Science, among those completing BSc final year

12. Chan Kai Ming Prize
 

The best student in Biological Sciences, among those completing BSc final year

13. Dr Spring Chen Memorial Prizes in Biological Sciences
 

(i) Two best students in Biological Sciences, among those completing BSc 1st year

(ii) The best student in Biological Sciences, among those completing BSc 2nd year

14. Peter Thrower Prize in Biological Sciences
 

The best student in Ecology & Biodiversity, among those completing the BSc final year

15. Daniel K. O. Chan Award for Outstanding Student in Biological Sciences

The award shall be made annually to an academic outstanding BSc student majoring in Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, Food and Nutritional Science, or Ecology and Biodiversity (or additional major in the field of Biological Sciences approved by the Selection Committee), among those completing the BSc final year

16. BSc Class of 1971 Prize

(i) The best student in Biological Sciences,  among those completing BSc 3rd Year

(ii) The best student in Physical Sciences, among those completing BSc 3rd year

17. Lam Chi Him Memorial Prize in Physics

(i) The best student amongst those completing the 1st year of the BSc curriculum in Physics (on the recommendation of the Head of Physics)

(ii) The best student amongst those completing the 2nd year of the BSc curriculum in Physics (on the recommendation of the Head of Physics)

18. Lam Fang Kwong Prize in Physics

The best student majoring in Physics, among those completing the BSc 3rd year

19. Professor C D Beling Memorial Prize in Physics

The award should be made annually to three students studying the BSc programme majoring in Physics, Mathematics/Physics or Astronomy, each in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of study and having achieved the best improvement in his/her annual academic performance (on the recommendation of the Head of Physics)

20. Ho Sin Hang Prize in Science

The best student among those completing the BSc final year in physical sciences

21. William Faid Memorial Prize in Physics

The student attaining the best result in Physics, among those completing the BSc final year

22. Patrick Chow Lum Wong Memorial Prize in Biochemistry

(i) The best student among those completing the 1st year of the BSc curriculum in Biochemistry

(ii) The best student among those completing the 2nd year of the BSc curriculum in Biochemistry

(iii) The best student among those completing the 3rd year of the BSc curriculum in Biochemistry

(iv) The best student among those completing the final year of the BSc curriculum in Biochemistry

23. Saw Gold Medal in Statistics

The prize shall be awarded annually to a final year undergraduate majoring in Statistics or Risk Management who has obtained First Class Honours in the Final Examination for the degree of Bachelor of Science. Of the First Class Honours degree candidates the prize shall be awarded to the one who has the highest average marks in the papers taken for Statistics courses

24. Yung Foundation Prizes in Earth Sciences

 

 

(i) The best student among those completing the 1st year of the BSc curriculum in Earth Sciences (on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences)

(ii) An outstanding student among those completing the 2nd year of the BSc curriculum in Geology or Earth System Science (on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences)

(iii) An outstanding student among those completing the 3rd year of the BSc curriculum in Geology or Earth System Science (on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences) 

(iv) An outstanding student among those completing the final year of the BSc curriculum in Geology or Earth System Science (on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences)

25. Fung Leung Chee Wai Diana Prize in Earth Sciences

The best 2nd year BSc student majoring in Geology or Earth System Science (on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences), among those completing the BSc 2nd year

The best 3rd year BSc student majoring in Geology or Earth System Science (on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences), among those completing the BSc 3rd year

26. Hong Kong Natural History Society Prize for Outstanding Student in Ecology and Biodiversity

The award shall be made annually on the basis of academic merit to a student majoring in Ecology & Biodiversity among those completing the final year of their BSc degree

27. Doris Chen Undergraduate Project Prizes

Not more than two undergraduate students majoring in Mathematics who have excellent performance in one of the eligible project courses prescribed by the Doris Chen Memorial Funds Committee

28. Professor Brian Morton Undergraduate Prize in Biology

The undergraduate prize shall be awarded annually on the basis of academic merit to a final year BSc student majoring in Biological Sciences, Food and Nutritional Science, or Ecology and Biodiversity or Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (or any major within the field of Biological Sciences approved by the Selection Committee)

29. GSHK Best Student Project Prize in Earth Sciences

The prize shall be awarded annually to one third-year or final-year undergraduate student in Earth System Science or Geology major on the basis of the best final year project, or a published research paper with the student as the first author.
