A team of three UG students, Lai Lexiao, Zheng Shaoxiong and Li Shuyao, at the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science was designated as Outstanding Winner in the 33rd Annual Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM).

This highly competitive contest was hosted by Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) and cohosted by The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), The Mathematical Association of America (MAA). This year, 8,843 teams from 13 countries participated in the contest. Only 13 teams were designated as Outstanding Winners.

Lai, Zheng and Li mentioned that taking part in the Mathematical Contest for Modeling was an excellent way to apply what they have learned in classes to real life situations. They would like to express their earnest gratitude to Dr Eddy Lam of Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science for serving as their advisor in the contest. The students also thought that the course Scientific Method and Reasoning (SCNC1111) profoundly inspired them, where Dr Eddy Lam, Dr Rachel Lui and Dr William Cheung taught them essential mathematical knowledge and techniques and helped them develop analytical mindsets.

Congratulations to the students for their being awarded in the contest.
