Jan 31, 2017 marked an auspicious day for the Laboratory for Space Research (LSR) at HKU.

A delegation of 8 members of the LSR led by the new director Professor Quentin Parker travelled to Shenzhen to participate in the opening ceremony of the “Lobster eye X-Ray Observatory” and associated dark matter workshop in the Silicon Valley Compound building in Shenzhen.

This event, co-organised by Dr Meng Su, Associate Professor at HKU Department of Physics and Deputy Director of LSR and a key player in the Lobster eye programme, brought together over 50 delegates from around Hong Kong and China. The assembled group comprised about 25 scientists from half a dozen universities and observatories and 25 local and regional government representatives, businesses, entrepreneurs and technical specialists.

This important, two-day event celebrated the strongly emerging partnership of 5 separate but equally important groups. The scientists were uniquely joining together in the spirit of cooperation, trust, mutual support and endeavor to leverage capacity and deliver technology and exciting science for China and Hong Kong in the area of Space science.

This unique team comprises the universities of Nanjing (via their excellent and leading School of Astronomy and Space Science), HKU (via the strongly emerging LSR in the Faculty of Science), the long established and highly reputable Beijing Institute of Space Mechanics and Electricity (BISME), and two newer but visionary satellite technology companies: Aerospace Beijing OriginSpace Ltd. and the Satelliteherd Science and Technology Co. Ltd.

A signing ceremony of event participation was held with representatives of each partner and a formal MoU is anticipated soon.
